Kathryn L. Honea, M.D.,
Medical Director of the ART Program, was previously the National
Medical Director of IVF Australia, and the founder and Director of the IVF
Program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. After obtaining her
Master's degree in the Laboratory of Medical Genetics at University of Alabama
at Birmingham, she completed medical school, as well as her internship and
residency in obstetrics and gynecology at University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Dr. Honea was awarded the J. Marion
Sims Award for Excellence in Obstetrics and Gynecology from UAB in 1979.
She studied in vitro fertilization at Royal Women's Hospital and Monash
University in Melbourne, Australia, in 1982. She returned to establish and
direct the In Vitro Fertilization Program at the University of Alabama at
Birmingham from 1983 through 1985, where she established the first successful
IVF pregnancy in the state of Alabama. During 1985, Dr. Honea worked with
General Electric to develop the first transvaginal ultrasound egg retrieval
system which has since become the standard of care in modern IVF programs.
Dr. Honea is a Diplomate of the American
Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the Subspecialty Board of Reproductive
Endocrinology. She has taught physician courses in laparoscopic and hysteroscopic
surgery techniques and is skilled in reconstructive surgery for infertility
and endometriosis.
Dr. Honea is recognized nationally as
a leader in fertility treatment. She has twice appeared as a guest speaker
on "The Today Show." Excerpts from her educational film on ultrasound-guided
egg retrievals, which also received first place recognition by the American
Fertility Society, were included on the LifeTime Network. She currently
provides personal comprehensive care for her patients through her infertility
practice at the ART Program of Alabama. |
